UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the easing of the COVID-19 lockdown in England would be gradual as he faced questions from MPs in London on Wednesday.
They were called in from Christmas recess to vote on new lockdown measures.
“The legislation the house will vote later on today runs until the 31 March, not because we expect the full national lockdown to continue until then, but to allow a steady, controlled and evidence-led move down through the tiers on a regional basis,” said Johnson.
The vote on the new lockdown in England comes as the UK is attempting to roll out its vaccination scheme. The country has registered record daily numbers of COVID infections due to the new strain of the virus.
Scotland and Wales are set to approve their measures separately.
