NASA spacecraft collects sample from nearby asteroid Bennu NASA’s OSIRIS-REX spacecraft has made a big cosmic feat, collecting samples from the asteroid Bennu.
The robotic probe will vacuum up some gravel, then haul the sample back to earth. These bite-sized bits of ancient space rock could hold clues to the origin of life.
Delivery of the precious asteroid pieces – won’t be until 2023.
On board the spacecraft is the OSIRIS-Rex Laser Altimeter (OLA), a lidar (light detection and ranging) system that will allow it to map the asteroid.
After scanning it will be able to produce a 3D model of Bennu giving scientists a better understanding of the asteroid’s topography and evolution.
Mike Drolet explains the complex mission, and the answers Bennu could provide.
