Ruptly is live from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta on Saturday, January 9, as Sriwijaya Air flight number 182 is feared to have crashed shortly after takeoff.
The passenger plane was travelling from Jakarta to Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan province on Indonesia’s Borneo island. Sixty-two people including 56 passengers and six crew members were on board, according to reports.
The Boeing 737-500 started losing altitude soon after departure, descending 3,000 metres (10,000 feet) in less than a minute, and lost contact with the control tower at 14:40 local time (07:40 GMT).
Suspected debris was reportedly found in the sea north of Jakarta as the Indonesian Transport Ministry confirmed a search and rescue operation has been launched in coordination with the National Transportation Safety Committee and the National Search and Rescue Agency.
