Almost a year after Iran mistakenly shot down Ukrainian International Airlines (UIA) flight PS752, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani renewed calls for the perpetrators of the incident to be put on trial.
"Those who caused this incident will certainly be tried in court for negligence," said Rouhani in a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday.
Rouhani discussed the compensation for the families of the deceased passengers adding, "the perpetrators must be tried with due diligence with its own conditions and in a fair trial."
The Iranian President once again emphasised Tehran would be welcoming the administration of US President-elect Biden if Washington signals its goodwill by upholding its obligations.
Flight PS752 crashed minutes after take-off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, on January 8 2020, killing all 176 passengers and crew on board.
A diplomatic spat ensued as Western leaders blamed Iran for shooting down the plane, which Iran denied at first.
On January 11, Iran’s military admitted "unintentionally" shooting down the plane.
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): "The government came to a meeting last week and decided to pay compensation to the people and did not consider citizenship (of the victims). No matter the citizenship, whether Iranian or non-Iranian, everyone will be compensated equally. We estimated $150,000 in damages for everyone equally. God willing, this money will be paid to them. We are also negotiating with Ukraine over the plane, and the negotiations are coming to an end."
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): "Those who caused this incident will certainly be tried in court for negligence or fault or whatever. And in this court, whatever justice and right we want to be implemented, without any concessions. God willing, this will be done. It was difficult for us in this situation. But at the same time, things were provided. $30 million was provided. So that we can solve this part of the problem. But this does not mean that it will affect the trial. The perpetrators must be tried with due diligence with its own conditions and in a fair trial."
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): "If the government that will come to power in the United States in the near future, that is when in two weeks when Mr. Biden comes to power, if that government says that the United States has stopped breaking glass, has repented, wants to be on the path of law, wants to fulfill its obligations. If he asks me, our answer is very obvious, clear, and simple, we say if you fulfill all the obligations, we will fulfill all the obligations. If you do not fulfill [your obligations], we will not bow down to you. If you fulfill your obligations, you have not deigned. You used to do illegal things, now you have stopped working illegally, you regret, you realized you were wrong."
SOT, Hassan Rouhani, Iranian President (Farsi): "The process is that the country is standing on its own feet, no one in the world should think that the sanctions would exhaust the Iranian nation. No one should think that the economic war would exhaust the Iranian nation. We continue the path with strength. Of course, whenever our opponent surrenders to the law, we welcome it. A man who carries misconduct, throws stones, breaks the glass, and in a moment becomes wise and says I do not want to break the glass anymore, should we not welcome?"
