The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) marks an ‘important milestone’ and will boost the regional economy during the pandemic said a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Beijing on Monday.
Fifteen countries have formed the world’s largest trading bloc with the new deal that was signed on Sunday, on the sidelines of a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
"After eight years of negotiations, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) was successfully signed yesterday, which marks the free trade zone with the largest population, the most diverse membership structure, and the most significant potential for development in the world, and is an important milestone in regional economic integration," said spokesperson Zhao Lijian.
The spokesperson also responded to Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations Bob Rae’s call on the UN to investigate evidence of genocide against China’s Uyghur minority.
"The ambassador also said in his speech that there is no doubt that Uyghur issues in Xinjiang apply to the definition of ‘genocide.’ But he also said that Canada has no evidence that such a thing happened in Xinjiang. Then I would like to ask him since there is no evidence, how can the Uyghurs in Xinjiang apply to this definition?” asked Zhao Lijian.
Human rights groups say hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs are held in ‘re-education’ camps in China’s western Xinjiang province.
